The Scholar Team for Research, Engagement, and Advancing Minority voices (STREAM) received funding from the Long-Range Planning Committee to host monthly virtual workshops in 2024. These workshops, called Fellow-led Opportunity Workshops (FLOWshops), ranged in topics from Business Card Making to Introductory Remote Sensing, and Science Policy. FLOWshops were proposed and led by early career professionals (ECPs) and students. Providing the platform for ECPs and students to lead workshops accomplished 2 objectives: 1) It facilitated the distribution of knowledge that is beneficial for advancing in the field of freshwater science, and 2) It allowed participants to teach and learn in an inclusive environment composed of their peers and allies. To determine the impacts of FLOWshops and the benefit of LRPC funding, all attendees were asked to complete a post workshop survey. We wanted to understand what knowledge they gained, their opinions on the programming, and their ideas and requests for further workshops. Responses to the surveys revealed that participants gained knowledge from the FLOWshops, showing that perceptions of knowledge on workshop topics improved as a result of attending the workshops. Attendees also enjoyed the casual nature of the workshops, gaining knowledge from someone from a similar identity, and the ease of access to resources. Finally, many of the participants voiced a preference to have more conversation during the workshops, suggesting the potential for FLOWshops to provide the benefit of networking and community building. All surveyed participants agreed that SFS should continue implementing regular, free, and virtual workshops for its early career and student members. FLOWshops hosted by STREAM provide this service to the SFS community. Feedback from survey participants will be used to continuously improve programming, mainly for the benefit of diverse individuals.
