The Nature Lab (NL) has played a unique role at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, Rhode Island) for more than 85 years. Over the last 15 years RISD has expanded natural and physical science course offerings for its students. Concurrently, the NL’s roles in the college’s coursework, research, internships and outreach activities have expanded. Natural science courses (often based in the Liberal Arts Department), as well as many interdisciplinary courses, are often held at the NL and/or use its labs and resources; they include ecological research (e.g., river, estuarine, salt marsh), observation, scientific illustration and imaging, and materials science. Numerous students have followed their interdisciplinary passions both during and after their studies. I teach an “intro to insects” course each fall; we use the microscope room every week, and all of our field and lab gear is easily accessible at the NL. My students’ final projects are researched and created for the purpose of teaching (selected) audiences about their chosen bug (= outreach)—especially its life cycle, anatomy, environmental and/or cultural roles, etc. Last fall several students selected aquatic insects for their outreach projects. I will share visuals (and audio) from a few of our water-focused interdisciplinary courses at the NL, with commentary and suggestions for other potential milieus that can incorporate science with art and design.
