One of Alan Covich's missions in life was to communicate the importance of freshwater ecosystems TO EVERYONE AND ANYONE. Whether we were waiting to get on a plane, getting groceries or celebrating happy hour with a roomful of strangers, Alan would eventually engage in a conversation with complete strangers about the importance of streams, rivers, lakes....even freshwater shrimp. It was a perfect collaboration then, when Jeremy Monroe who had just started Freshwaters Illustrated, decided to make one of his first films highlighting Alan, Omar Perez-Reyes and our long-term research in Puerto Rico. With the mission of 'The Freshwaters Illustrated Mission is raising public awareness about the life, study, and conservation of freshwater ecosystems through immersive visual media and storytelling, and sharing imagery and stories with educators, conservation groups, and community audiences', this was the perfect outlet to communicate our work to a wide range of listeners. This video is a great example of how to communicate the importance of freshwater ecosystem services.
