PFAS contamination in Puerto Rico: examining environmental pathways and socio-economic impacts on vulnerable communities (118862)

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have emerged as pervasive global pollutants. These water soluble, persistent, and bioaccumulative compounds negatively influence human and ecosystem health. While research has primarily focused on PFAS contamination in drinking water systems and associated health effects, there is a growing need to understand the broader environmental pathways and socio-economic ramification of these chemicals. Our study adopts a novel approach by investigating PFAS contamination in Puerto Rico, a region characterized by environmental justice challenges and a notable gap in research on PFAS contamination. Historical U.S. involvement in industrial activities and military installations on the island have led to long-term PFAS pollution in the area, an area also struggling to maintain adequate infrastructure to treat contamination. This suggests that PFAS pollution may be disproportionately impacting these communities which are already facing disparities with access to clean water and other essential resources. This ongoing research addresses these gaps by (1) analyzing PFAS levels in water bodies near contamination sources and their stream outlets in both urban and rural areas, (2) identifying the pathways through which PFAS enter human populations, and (3) evaluating the socio-economic implications of these pathways. PFAS concentrations will be compared between rural and urban stream samples. To better understand how PFAS contamination disproportionately affects vulnerable communities the pathways of PFAS exposure, and their socio-economic impacts will be explored through geospatial analyses, incorporating factors like income, race, and health. By focusing on Puerto Rico, we aim to examine the potential burden of PFAS exposure on vulnerable communities, provide essential data, and advance understanding of the environmental and social impacts of PFAS contamination in the region.
