Lance H Butler

Lance Butler completed his undergraduate degree in Biology and Environmental Science (B.S.) at Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Upon completion, Mr. Butler continued is education at the University of Delaware in Marine Biology and Marine Geology in Lewes, Delaware. Mr. Butler combined his graduate work at the University of Delaware with an Aquatic Biology concentration at West Chester University, West Chester, Pennsylvania to obtain his master’s of science degree. Currently, Mr. Butler is pursuing his PhD in Environmental Science at Drexel University, focusing on restoration ecology and bioremediation in aquatic ecosystems. Mr. Butler has been an employee of the Philadelphia Water Department for twenty-four years and is presently a Senior Scientist within the Department’s Office of Watersheds. Mr. Butler’s work encompasses a variety of research and implementation projects ranging from biological, physical and chemical monitoring of the City’s waterways to ecosystem-based restoration projects in the Schuylkill and Delaware drainages. Presently, his work has been focused on freshwater mussel restoration and the evaluation of ecosystem services provided by bivalve communities in novel urban habitats. Recently, Mr. Butler was involved in the development and implementation of the Aquatic Research and Restoration Center (ARRC), a multi-agency cooperative aimed at restoring and enhancing aquatic ecosystems in the urban portions of the Delaware Basin.
