Cora M Steinbach

Studying big waves at eye level in her whitewater kayak fueled Cora’s desire to pursue a career in river science. Her master’s research explores river metabolism—integrative measures of daily primary production and respiration— as a prediction tool for nuisance algal blooms in the Gallatin River, Montana, USA. She is particularly interested in the synchrony between benthic algal biomass and metabolism estimates. Cora is excited about using metabolism as a proxy for algal biomass in rivers and to monitor ecosystem change over time. She witnessed the first widespread algal bloom on the Gallatin while working as a river guide and has been curious about eutrophication ever since. Her work blends concepts from biogeochemistry, geomorphology, and ecology. If forced to pick a favorite hobby, it would be a 10-way tie.
