Arya Mohanan
I’m a Ph.D. student in Environmental Science at the University of North Texas (UNT), working along with Dr. Juliana D'Andrilli. I began my doctoral journey in Fall 2024, following the completion of my M.S. in Environmental Science at UNT in June 2024. Originally from India, holds a B.Sc. in Zoology from Sacred Heart College, Thevara, Kerala, where I was actively involved in research on avian diversity. During my Master’s studies, my research focused on ecological diversity, with the thesis titled "Diversity Patterns of Chilean Tardigrades: Exploring Alpha and Beta Diversities at Multiple Spatial Scales." My interest in understanding biodiversity led me to investigate tardigrade communities across Chile. Eager for a new direction, transitioned from ecology to environmental chemistry for my Ph.D. research. Now, I’m focusing on water quality and optical properties in a metal-contaminated river undergoing restoration in western Montana, working with advanced biogeochemical instruments and contributing to the Long-Term Research in Environmental Biology (LTREB) project. Outside my academic career, I’m a trained Indian classical dancer, specialized in Bharathanatyam. I also enjoy cooking, traveling, and taking on adventurous activities like skydiving.
